TCHSF SUPPORTS THE TRADITIONS OF TULSA CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

THE ARCHIVES

In 1985, a large heroic size Great Spirit statue in Woodward Park was dedicated. The statue is lit at night and the TCHS Foundation takes care of its maintenance.

ASSEMBLIES

FOR MANY YEARS WEEKLY ASSEMBLIES BEGAN WITH AN OPENING RITUAL INCLUDING

THE STUDENT'S CREED

I believe in honest work, in generous comradeship, in the courage of high convictions.

I believe in the inspiration that comes from contact with all that is truest and best, in books, in people, in life.

I believe in loyalty to our high school, the fostering mother of these ideals, and I pledge her my allegiance in all her undertakings; in all that will make her a stronger and nobler school.

THE AMERICAN'S CREED

by William Tyler Page

I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.
I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

–Written 1917, accepted by the United States House of Representatives on April 3, 1918.

THE SCHOOL HYMN AND PEP SONGS

THE. AUDITORIUM LECTERN

The  Auditorium  Lectern was given to the school by the Class of 1955. It was restored by the Foundation in 2016 for a cost of $560. A plaque was attached indicating it as a gift from the Class of 1955 and restored by the Foundation in 2016.

THE FRIENDSHIP CHAIN

THE TRADITIONAL CLASS RING

"Central's ring is unique; no other school in the nation has one like ours. In fact, the design is copyrighted and registered. It was adopted by the student body in 1956 as the standard ring. The shape of the ring symbolizes school unity, a never ending circle that includes every student." The Spirit of Central

THE ART COLLECTION

An inventory was created in 2016 using pictures of the artwork from the downtown building.

A couple of paintings were returned to Central by Eleanor Carmack after she repaired them, so they probably need to go to Gilcrease.

A Board Member has taken on the archives project to identify, categorize and locate the artwork that was moved from the downtown building to the West Edison campus. After this is complete she plans to do the same with the trophies.

It was suggested that if we could get a showing of this collection and perhaps a story written in the newspaper, that we may be able to turn this into a fund raiser. This idea was met with much enthusiasm.  A Board member said he knows there is a plastic casting of the death mask of Lincoln among the items.

THE MEMORIAL PIPE ORGAN

"The graduating class of 1924 donated the balance of its class treasury to the initial purchase of an organ for the new South Auditorium of the school. The following classes followed that example until the total cost of the organ had been accumulated. The Board of Education in 1926 authorized the purchase of the organ although the final payment was not made until the donation of the class of 1935. A plaque on the organ states that the total cost was $35,817.67. The organ was dedicated on March 4, 1927. Replacement of the organ today would cost $750,000.

When the new building at 3101 W. Edison St. was completed in 1976 the auditorium was designed specifically for the installation of the organ. The console has four keyboards, and each of the organ's 45 ranks represents a particular instrumental sound. The pipes are located at different corners of the auditorium, creating a "surround sound"."The Spirit of Central

The rededication of Central's Memorial Pipe Organ was held on February 21, 2003.

THE DAZE AND ROYALTY

Central Royalty is an earned honor

Miss Central is elected each fall by the senior class.

Prior to the DAZE seniors nominate 3 candidates of the senior class to be voted on by the student

body for the honor of King DAZE; the identity of the winner is kept secret until the opening night of

the DAZE.

The first High School DAZE was presented in 1927. Prior to that first production, there were five

football queens. Speech teacher Miss Alphild Larson directed the student shows from 1929-1954;

Mrs. Iona Ballew Freeman, 1955-1964. Albert Martin directed the staging of the shows from 1929 -

1970. As a student, he helped stage the first two shows. Many nationally known artists began their

careers on the Central stage and in the DAZE: Ralph Blane (Hunsecker), Paul Harvey (Aurandt),

Tony Randall (Leonard Rosenberg), Susan Watson, Linda Roark-Strummer, Jim Hartz.
